Abstract

In the 16th century the Gipuzkoan shipping industry experienced one of the most prosperous moments in history. Shipbuilding was one of the main economic activities in the province, on account of both the resources generated and the workforce employed. In addition, the fact that the fi rst shipyards specialised in manufacturing large-scale vessels led to Gipuzkoa becoming one of the main shipping centres on the Peninsula in the next century.
