Abstract

The purpose of the article is to provide the history of the Commission
of Historical and Artistic Monuments of Gipuzkoa from its founding in
1844 to the remodeling of the these Provincial Commissions in 1865. As the
peripheral organs of the nascent liberal State, created after the exclaustration
of the religious and the deamortization of their property, the provincial
Monumental Commissions were the fi rst attempt at offi cial preservation of the
Cultural Heritage, with the creation of Libraries, Museums, and Monumental
Catalogues. In the case of Gipuzkoa, these efforts had no signifi cant effect,
since without the protection of the Provincial Council and the representatives
of the Treasury, they lacked adequate personal and material means to carry
out their duties.
