Abstract
As a result of the extensive research conducted over many years on the
Andra Mari church, we have discovered numerous new pieces of information
that signifi cantly alter what has been previously stated about this church.
Andra Mari of Galdácano is a Romanesque church, probably founded by a
Navarrese king near a Roman road that came from Irun, along which pilgrims
to Santiago passed. We present four documents proving that this
church already existed in the second half of the 12th century. Regarding the
reason for its foundation, it is probably related to the Navarrese border reinforcement
policy against the threat of Castilian expansion.
Furthermore, we have found abundant evidence and elements supporting
that, at the time of its construction, it was a fortifi ed church. Finally, we have
also found numerous pieces of information indicating that the current church
consists of three sections of different ages: one belonging to a 12th-century
church, another from the 13th century, and the last one from the 16th century,
as well as to suggest its possible evolution.
