Abstract
This work arises from the author’s interest in the history and culture
related to the Valle de Mena (Burgos), bordered by the Basque provinces of
Vizcaya and Álava. There are two further reasons to devote some time to the
critical and philological refl ection and analysis of “La cabra negra” (The
black goat), written by Antonio de Trueba (1819-1889): the neglect by scholars
of the Basque author’s stories to this prototypical story tale and, above
all, the relevant textual difference between the fi rst version, with the aforementioned
title, and the second, with the title “El primer pecado” (The First
Sin”).
Sorry if we do not reveal any more of the content within this article here,
as we would not reveal anything about the plot of a fi ctional story.
